PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Honors Program at William Woods University is a selective program that fosters the growth of students who are dedicated, imaginative, and excited about learning. The program is a supportive community composed of students from all majors on campus. There are approximately 20 students accepted into the program each year.
Once a month students have lunch together and discuss their coursework, research, organization participation, and service learning activities. Because there are students from all majors represented, the diversity of interests allows for challenging interactions between students as they seek to understand one another's approaches to learning and perspectives on topics.
To be successful in honors courses, students must be active learners ready to engage in the interchange of ideas among the students in the course and between the student and the professor. The courses are designed to provide an enriched learning experience where the coverage is more in-depth than non-honors courses. The program is committed to providing opportunities for students to employ creative and critical thinking as they serve the campus and greater communities.
The goals of the program are
- to support a learning community that is intellectually rigorous and culturally enriching;
- to challenge students to connect the classroom with the larger world by broadening their social and cultural experiences;
- to promote civic engagement and responsible leadership;
- to support students’ efforts through resources and mentoring.
ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible for the program, incoming freshmen need to have a high ACT score (we are looking for something above a 25) and a high cumulative GPA (something around 3.5/4.0). Students will provide an essay that demonstrates their writing ability and complete an interview with the honors program director. Students who believe their academic ability and leadership qualities are not accurately reflected by their ACT and GPA scores may apply and discuss these issues with the director. We are looking for students who enjoy challenges and are motivated to be active in the program. We seek active rather than passive learners.
Students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher to remain in the program. If a student’s GPA falls below 3.4, the student is given one semester of probation to bring the GPA to 3.4 or higher.
