NATIONAL SURVEY OF STUDENT ENGAGEMENT (NSSE)

NSSE at WWU

William Woods students participated in the survey in 2004, 2005, and 2006 and will again in 2008. In 2006, 259,800 students from 558 colleges and universities responded to the survey. The William Woods response rate has always been considerably higher than the average rate. In 2006, 49% of WWU freshmen and seniors provided their feedback, compared to a 34% rate across campuses nationwide.

Using results to promote student success

Members of the William Woods community analyze NSSE results in various settings and set priorities for promoting student success. The following groups routinely use NSSE findings to inform their improvement efforts:

  • Strategic Planning Team
  • President's Cabinet
  • Academic Council (Division Chairs)
  • Faculty
  • Student Life staff
  • Retention Committee

Examples of actions based at least in part on NSSE results include the following:

  • The Academic Dean established Academic Challenge as a priority for faculty, beginning in 2004. Benchmark scores for seniors in that area have increased each year since.
  • Student Life used results to inform their long-range planning.
  • Student focus groups have further explored specific results and presented findings to campus decision makers.
  • Equestrian faculty and the Coordinator of Academic Advising developed effective new advising procedures for equestrian majors.
  • The Business Division began holding informational sessions about internships.
  • The 2006 HLC accreditation self-study celebrated student-faculty interaction as a strength at WWU.
