Stepanie BurgerBurger Ends Career at William Woods

As the William Woods University women’s basketball team begins to look to next season, we would be remiss not take a moment to reflect on the career of senior, Stephanie Burger.  Burger came to William Woods from Hickman High School in Columbia, Missouri.  Little did we know, she would leave the Owls nest as one the most celebrated women’s basketball players in school history.

Stephanie certainly knew how to leave an impression.  The 5’8” guard finished her playing career second in assists, third in scoring, ninth in steals and 15th in rebounds.  “The record book by itself is simply stats, but having the knowledge that I was able to maintain a consistency for the team even through three different coaches makes the record book more meaningful to me,” said a modest Burger.  “During Stephanie’s tenure at William Woods University she has been one of our most consistent players,” said head women’s basketball coach Marcy Myers. “She has great court sense and a high basketball IQ that every coach loves in a point guard,” Myers added.  When you put into perspective the three different systems, styles, and approaches that came with three of her four seasons, the accomplishments are even more impressive.  Not the records, not the awards, just the team.

Burger began her career in the same fashion in which she ended it.  Her freshman year she started or appeared in all 32 of the Owls games.  She averaged 11 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.  Burger was second on the team in scoring and helped propel the Owls to a 16-16 season.  That year William Woods lost in the second round of the American Midwest Conference tournament.

Stephanie BurgerHer sophomore season, Burger led the Owls in scoring, averaging 16.15 points per game while shooting 42% from the field.  The sophomore also led the team in rebounds, averaging 6.08 per game.  If that wasn’t enough, Burger led the squad with 38 steals and 96 assists.  The Owls finished the year 16-12.  They were again knocked out of the American Midwest Conference tournament in the second round.  For her efforts, Burger was selected to the First Team All-AMC.  When asked about her most memorable moment, she was quick to bring up the 2005-06 season.  It had nothing to do with any records or awards; it was one moment, one game.  “One of my most memorable moments while at William Woods was beating Columbia College that year on our home court.”  On February 7th, 2006, the Owls upset nationally ranked, and heavily favored, Columbia College 77-71 in the Helen Stephens Sports Complex.  It would be the last time the Owls would taste victory over the AMC rival.

It has been well documented that the past two seasons at William Woods were challenging for Burger and the Owls.  William Woods managed nine wins over that span and were not able to advance beyond the opening round of the AMC post-season tournament.  During those tough times, Burger continued to lead her team both on and off the court.  Along the way she joined the 1000 point club, was selected to the First Team All-AMC twice more, and concluded her academic career by being a member of the AMC All-Academic team four times.

It would have been easy to walk away when things got tough.  It would have been understandable to grow frustrated with the losses.  It would have been an option to just “play out” the season.  Stephanie Burger chose to compete until her time here was done.  “She is a loyal WWU Owl,” said William Woods University Athletics Director Larry York.  “She bleeds Green and White.  She has learned that you don’t quit in the middle of something you start.”  When asked what she was most proud of during her time here, the answer was simple and poignant; “I'm proud of finishing my basketball career at William Woods, and being able to maintain a high academic standard during that time.”

Stephanie Burger

Her playing career at William Woods ended on February 29th, with a first round loss in the AMC post-season tournament.  There was little fanfare.  There were few that noted the moment.  However, on that night in St. Louis, Missouri, one of the most storied careers in William Woods women’s basketball history came to an end.  When a career ends, and you sit atop the record books, what does one remember?  For Burger, her answer was again short and poignant, “I will always remember winning my first and last home games.”

Not the records, not the awards, just the team.

Basketball Looks To The Future (Sept. 27)

Head women’s basketball coach Marcy Myers is beginning her second year at the helm of the William Woods University women’s basketball program.  Myers expects smoother seas this year.  The Owls are looking to rebound from a tough 2006-07 season.  They dropped fourteen of their last fifteen games and ended the season with a 5-25 record.  As Coach Myers puts the Owls through their pre-season conditioning, she has them focused in one direction – forward.

“Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” – “If you live in the past, you die in the past” – feel free to insert your own motivational cliché anywhere you want.  For this group of Owl basketball players its about competing at a high level, outworking their opponents, and focusing on the season ahead of them, not the one behind them.

Coach Myers attacked the recruiting trail in the off-season and brought in ten new players to the program this year.  Nine of those ten players are freshman.  They join four returning players to fill out the roster.  Two of those veterans include senior Stephanie Burger and senior Casey Westhues.  Burger was a 1st Team All-AMC selection last year; averaging 18.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.  Westhues averaged 10.6 points and 6.1 rebounds per game for the Owls.

The Owls will look to right the ship beginning on Tuesday, November 6th, at Central Methodist University.  They will open their home schedule on Tuesday, November 13th, vs. the College of the Ozarks.  As the new group of recruits begins to mesh with the veterans, progress can clearly be seen.  If pre-season reviews are any indication of the season to come, calmer seas are on the horizon.

Burgess Joins Coaching Staff (Sept.)

Head Women’s Basketball coach Marcy Myers announces the hiring of Cody Burgess as an assistant coach for the 2007-08 season.

Burgess comes to William Woods after serving as an assistant coach at North Pole High School in North Pole, Alaska.  Last season, North Pole HS recorded a second place finish at the Alaska state championships in the 4A division.

Burgess played at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.  During her time there she was selected First Team All-West Region in 2005 and Second Team All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference in 2003 and 2005.  She led the GNAC in scoring during the 2003 and 2005 season.  Burgess was selected team captain in 2004-2005.

Before playing at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Burgess played two seasons at Wenatchee Valley College.  She was named First Team All-Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges in 2002, as well as team MVP.

Coach Burgess received her Bachelor of Science in Natural Resources Management, Forestry option from the University of Alaska Fairbanks.  She is currently working towards her Master's in Education in Athletic Administration at William Woods University.
