Active: an initiated member of a sorority or fraternity.
Bid: a formal invitation to join a sorority for fraternity.
Chapter: the local collegiate member of an international Greek organization.
Continuous Open Bidding (COB): the informal process of membership selection that begins after Formal Recruitment and continues throughout the academic year.
Fraternity: formally, it is the name applied to all Greek-letter organizations. Informally, it applies to men’s groups.
Formal Recruitment: the structured process of membership selection held during new student orientation.
Initiation: a formal, traditional ceremony by which new members become new initiates.
Panhellenic: the governing body that oversees women’s Greek organizations.
Philanthropy: a charity or service organization that a sorority of fraternity supports through special activities and service projects, which could include awareness and involvement, or the raising of funds.
Pi Chi (Recruitment Counselor): a woman who acts as a counselor for all potential new members participating in the Sorority Formal Recruitment process.
Potential New Member: a term for someone being recruited by a sorority or fraternity.
Sorority: a group of women joined together in friendship to share social and educational experiences. A Greek-letter sisterhood is also called a women’s fraternity.
