Counseling services offers professional mental health services to support student's personal and academic development.
Who comes to counseling?
Students seek counseling for a variety of reasons. Some students come to college with a pre-existing mental health concern, others find themselves struggling with these issues while at school. Other students seek counseling to better understand the transition and adjustment to college, relationship issues, or family concerns.
Services Provided
The counselor provides individual and group counseling, and programming on mental health topics. In addition the counselor is available to act as a referral for community resources and to consult about mental health issues on campus.
What to expect in counseling
In the first session you and the counselor will discuss your concerns and goals, and the counselor will suggest some ways that counseling can benefit you. Depending on your needs and interests counseling can be a short or long term process. Also depending upon your needs and availability of local resources, the counselor may provide a referral for more suitable services in the community.
Confidentiality
Counseling services keeps mental health records in accordance with professional, legal and ethical guidelines. Other than authorized staff, no one will have access to records unless the patient releases them in writing. They will not become part of the student’s academic file, and even the fact that the student has come to Counseling and Health Services will not be divulged to anyone without the student’s permission.
In accordance with professional, ethical and legal guidelines, safety takes precedence over confidentiality. Therefore, if a student poses a threat to either to himself/herself or to another person staff will report such information as is needed to maintain safety. The information will only be shared with those who will make appropriate use of such information.
