Vomiting and Diarrhea

Vomiting and diarrhea, also known as gastroenteritis, is usually caused by viral infections which resolve in a day or two. Abdominal pain, cramping, chills, fatigue, body aches and nausea often accompany the vomiting or diarrhea. Other common reasons for vomiting and diarrhea among young adults are too much alcohol or pregnancy.

Rest and fluids are the best treatment.

Drink frequent small sips of liquids such as these:

  • Water
  • Tea
  • Coffee
  • Broth/soup
  • Some fruit juices
  • Soda
  • Jell-O
  • Popsicles
  • Gatorade/PowerAde

Drinks containing a lot of sugar can worsen diarrhea for some.

Drink what you prefer; the main point is that you drink something.

Food is OK, but only if you feel hungry. Don’t force yourself to eat.

Avoid foods high in fat and protein.

In contrast here food choices are often easier to digest:

Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Crackers, and Yogurt.

Regular hand washing will reduce the spread of this contagious illness.

There are medicines available but they rarely reduce the length or severity of the vomiting and diarrhea, and so are not recommended.

If you have any of these additional symptoms, you may have a more serious problem and should seek medical attention:

  • Fever over 100.0 F
  • Vomiting blood
  • Blood in diarrhea
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Drowsy or confused

Signs of dehydration:

  • Very dark urine
  • Very dry mouth
  • No tears
  • Severe weakness
